Shopify Interview Guide
Role: Software Engineer
Shopify's process is less LC-heavy than big tech and heavily weights culture fit and communication. AI usage is explicitly encouraged in the technical round. Every phase is a real filter — candidates who pass reference checks have still been rejected at the final stage.
Phase 1 — Online Assessment (OA)
Part 1: Coding (2–3 questions)
- One LC medium — usually an interactive game simulation or logic problem
- One or two easier questions, sometimes language-locked (Ruby or C++ required)
Part 2: Behavioral / Logic
- IQ-style logic questions
- Personality ranking — choose between two statements that describe you
If a recruiter manually pushed you through to the process, you typically just need to avoid bombing the OA to advance. The bar here is a floor, not a ceiling.
Phase 2 — Pair Programming (PP)
Format: OOP-style problem in your own local IDE. 30–45 minutes of implementation + discussion.
AI is highly recommended. Shopify explicitly encourages ChatGPT, Copilot, Cursor, etc. But you must understand and be able to explain any generated code — the interviewer will probe.
What you need to do to pass:
- Solve the base problem (not sufficient on its own)
- Write test cases — this is explicitly required
- Complete the bonus/extended features
- Communicate your design decisions throughout — treat it as pair programming, not a solo test
Common problem patterns:
- CRUD app for a given domain (products, orders, bookings)
BankAccountclass with deposits, withdrawals, transfers, transaction history- Car rental system with availability checking and date-based logic
- Word guessing game (Wordle-style) with per-letter feedback and attempt tracking
Post-implementation discussion: Expect a scalability question — "How would this handle 1 billion objects?" Hit: persistent storage, sharding, caching, concurrency handling.
Phase 3 — Life Story Interview
Format: Entirely behavioral — your background, motivations, and values. No coding.
The Tobi homework: When you get the interview invite, Shopify sends articles and letters by CEO Tobi Lütke. Read them carefully and form real opinions. The interviewer will ask directly about his statements and how they resonate with you. A vague or unread answer is a red flag.
Typical questions:
- Walk me through how you got into software engineering — your full story
- Why Shopify specifically? (Generic answers fail — connect to something real)
- Tell me about your proudest project and what made it remarkable
- What do you value most in the teams and environments you work in?
- What did you think of [specific thing Tobi wrote]?
The vibe check: Interviewers at this stage are assessing genuine fit. If you connect with the interviewer and your story comes across as authentic, you pass. If it feels scripted or misaligned with Shopify's culture, you don't — regardless of your technical ability.
Phase 4 — Reference Check & Decision
Near the end of the process, you'll need one colleague and one superior to fill out a questionnaire about you. Line these up in advance.
Failing any stage ends the process. There is no bypass.
Tips
- OA: Broad LC prep (easy to medium) covers it. Know basic Ruby syntax if possible — some questions are language-locked.
- Pair programming: OOP fundamentals > LC grinding. Practice designing and testing classes. Use AI fluently but own what it generates.
- Life Story: Do the Tobi reading. Treat it as a conversation. The more genuine and specific your answers, the better.
- References: Have them ready before you start the process — reference checks happen quickly once you reach that stage.
Common Mistakes
- Solving the OOP problem but skipping test cases — this alone can disqualify you
- Using AI and not being able to explain the output
- Generic "why Shopify" answers that don't reference anything specific
- Not reading Tobi's letters before the Life Story round
- Underestimating Life Story — multiple candidates with strong technicals were cut here
