Nova Prospect Interview Process and HR Screen
Frequency: Reported (2026 cycle)
Process Summary
Reported as a six-round process:
Nova ints is 6 rounds: 1 recruiter call (I just had vibe check pretty chill no resume grill), 3 technicals with engineer, 1 behavioral with like a senior manager, and 1 round with the founder
Additional context from the same candidate:
- The recruiter call was a laid-back vibe check with no resume grill, and the recruiter was flexible about letting the candidate delay interviews.
- Headcount for the role was described as "a couple" — consistent with the firm being roughly 40 people.
HR Screen: What They Evaluate
A candidate in the process shared the verbatim guidance they received (likely from their headhunter) about the opening HR chat:
For the HR chat, it will be a standard intro chat where they'll talk about your background and give you an overview of the team. One thing that they look for is for someone who is able to explain in detail what they work on and how it affects your team and/or other teams. They like people who understand the "why" behind what they're working on. The important thing the HR person wants is when she gets off the call she has a clear understanding of what you work on and how it impacts the business. They like to see interesting projects and ownership. Communication is important, they like people who give clear and concrete responses and don't like when people ramble on about something.
Even though it is just a chat with HR you should view it as an interview. I have had people with strong backgrounds not make it through this stage.
Key takeaways:
- Treat the HR chat as a real interview — candidates with strong backgrounds have been cut at this stage.
- Be able to explain in detail what you work on, why it matters, and how it impacts your team and the business.
- They value interesting projects, ownership, and clear, concrete communication; rambling is a negative signal.
Firm Context
- Small crypto trading firm (~40 people); the CEO was reportedly high up at Citadel Securities.
- Compensation reported as Jane Street-level.
- Process difficulty reputation: "not too hard, but definitely hard."
